Irwin Krieger

Irwin Krieger is a clinical social worker in private practice in New Haven. He has provided psychotherapy for LGBT individuals, couples and families for over 25 years. He was a volunteer counselor in the early days of AIDS Project New Haven and went on to supervise social work students placed at APNH. He co-facilitated the Coming Out group at the New Haven Gay and Lesbian Community Center and provided supervision for the facilitators of the Center’s first youth group. In addition to working in private practice, he was the mental health clinician at AIDS Interfaith for 4 years and has been on the mental health team at APNH for the past 6 years.

For the past 8 years, Irwin has been working extensively with transgender teens and young adults and their parents. His book, Helping Your Transgender Teen: A Guide for Parents, was published in 2011. With the goal of expanding the base of knowledgeable providers for transgender teens and their families, Irwin provides training for mental health and health care professionals. Irwin was the keynote speaker at the GSA Summit at Eastern CT State University in the fall of 2011. He has presented at the World Professional Association for Transgender Health Symposium in Atlanta, TransFormations in New York City, the Philadelphia Trans-Health Conference, and the True Colors Conference in Connecticut.

Irwin and his partner, John, have been together for 27 years. Their lives are enriched by their children, Ezra and Rosie.
