For the 2017-2018 school year, we are offering three scholarships!

Two scholarships through the David Knapp Scholarship Fund:

  • We will award one $500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior, college freshman or college sophomore.
  • Our second $500 scholarship will go to a college junior, senior, graduate, or post-graduate student.

The scholarship fund is named in honor of David Knapp, a longtime friend and supporter of the NHPC, and Dorothy Award honoree. David's amazing list of accomplishments include: starting Connecticut chapters of GLSEN (the Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network) and PFLAG (Parents & Friends of Lesbians and Gays), both of which remain incredibly active today; leading his church, the First Church of Christ of Guilford, in its efforts to become an open and affirming organization; past leadership of - and current membership in - Stonewall Speakers, a Connecticut-based speakers bureau; and remaining at the forefront of the charge to get the Boy Scouts of America to change its archaic policy on homosexuality. David's contributions number so significantly that they are catalogued under the name "David Knapp Papers" at the Yale University Library. The New Haven Pride Center is proud to honor David by naming our original scholarship fund after him.

NEW! One scholarship through the Rosa Nilvo O'Connell Scholarship Fund:

  • Any applications to either of the David Knapp Scholarship Fund awards in 2017 will also be automatically applied to the Rosa Nilvo O'Connell Scholarship Fund this calendar year. A bonus criteria for this $1,000 scholarship will exist for anyone who is pursuing a degree in the medical field (nursing, medical doctorate, etc.).

The Rosa Nilvo O'Connell Scholarship Fund was created in January, 2016 by the family of Rosa in her honor after her passing in late 2015. Rosa is the mother of longtime Center board member and co-president Joshua O'Connell. In her lifetime Rosa was heavily involved in volunteerism, and believed in supporting youth and the LGBT community. The scholarship aims to continue her work and legacy via an annual award of $1,000. In recognition of her more than quarter century as a nurse, those pursuing a medical degree will be given a bonus score towards the Rosa Nilvo O'Connell Scholarship in 2016.
