NHGLCC Board Announces Name Change

After years of debate, the Center Board of Directors voted in July 2008 to change the name of the Center to the New Haven Pride Center. The decision was prompted largely to reflect the ever expanding constituency that comprises the sexual minority community.

There was plenty of discussion of amending the name to NHGLBTCC to include “bisexual” and “transgender,” but that posed several other concerns. That would have left off those that identify as queer or questioning, or those that identify as “intersex.” Partly because of the evolution of the community, there was the possibility that the Center would be faced with future concerns.

Additionally, the Board felt that the name was already lengthy and with the addition of new identities and acronyms, that another solution was required. By using the word “pride” in our name, the Center can easily accommodate the many disparate communities that make up the community - now and yet to come – with one honorable word that has a universal meaning.

With this announcement, the Center will begin to use the new name as it phases out the old name, and the new name will be in full use by the end of the year. It is our hope that the many diverse people that currently and potentially use the Center recognize that the Center and its Board of Directors are responsive to their concerns and that the name of the organization must reflect the values of the entire community.
