Sample what’s new with ‘The Tastes of Fall’
Published Sep 1, 2007
Building upon the Center’s annual Wine Tasting event, the Center is launching a fall schedule that will truly make your mouth water. Under the banner The Tastes of Fall, the Center will offer a sampling of entertainment, as well as an introduction to the new board members and the groups currently offered at the Center.
The fall schedule begins Sunday, Sept. 16 with our first-ever beer tasting event. The beer tasting will run 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Center.
There is a rich heritage of European beer styles that was lost in America but has been found again through imports and the experimentation of microbrews. During Prohibition the bootleggers watered down their beer to increase profits. Americans came to think this thin watery brew was what beer was like and set the stage for the mass market popularity of light, relatively tasteless pilsners such as Bud and Miller. At the Center’s Beer Tasting you can sample a wide variety of imports and microbrews from Wheat Beers to dark Stouts and Porters, flavorful Trappist Ales to fruity Belgian Lambics.
The donation to enter is $20 for Center Members, $25 for non-member. Please purchase your ticket before the tasting so we know how many people to plan for.
Later in September, get a taste for what the Center has been up to lately by joining us for our Center Open House and Community Meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 26.
The new NHGLCC board, along with facilitators of many of our groups, will be on hand to have an informal meet-and-greet with community members and share the direction of the groups and the Center itself. Those interested in volunteering can also enlist to help with upcoming projects at the Center such as the 5th annual Dorothy Awards. The open house will take place 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Center and is open to all.
October brings a chance to stroll through New Haven’s history when the Center connects with a long standing community partner, Evergreen Cemetery, 769 Ella Grasso Boulevard, New Haven, for an “Autumn Lantern Tour” featuring the final resting sites of New Haven’s most notable people. Many still recall the legend of Midnight Mary! The tour starts at sundown for a fun way to remember our history, Friday, October 19 from 5:30 to 7 pm. Tickets are $10 for non-members, $8 for members. All ages are welcome for this event, and is a great idea for kids during the Halloween season. Bring your own flashlight. Chocolate refreshments will be included.
Finally, the fall season will be capped by our popular annual Wine Tasting event on Nov. 2. As per tradition, a variety of different wines will be available to sample, and an expert will be on hand to provide knowledge about the wines and what to look for. The event will be held at the Center 6:00-8:00 p.m. As with the beer tasting, tickets will be $20 for members and $25 for non-members.
After the completion of the fall season, the Center still has more planned. Keep an eye out at www.nhglcc.org and the November newsletter for notice of our annual town meeting in January, and mark your calendars now for the 5th Annual Dorothy Awards, which will take place Saturday, Mar. 8, 2008 at Fantasia in North Haven.
For more information on any of the tasting events, or to order tickets, send an E-mail to nhglcc@gmail.com or call the Center at (203) 387-2252.
Please RSVP in advance so we can identify how many participants we can expect. Send your check, your name, which event or events you will be attending and whether you are a member or not to the NHGLCC at PO Box 8914, New Haven, CT 06532.
