Halloween is behind us – as are all the Kate Gosselin costumes – and 2010 is quite literally around the corner! It’s an amazing time of year, and it’s been an amazing autumn for the New Haven Pride Center.

Last month, we were excited to host our first off-site concert event of the year, in conjunction with the United Church on the Green. Transgender artists, Dysphoric Cyborgs performed an incredible 90-minute set that included spoken word artistry, a puppet show, and of course some great music. If you missed the Dysphoric Cyborgs show, check out our review here, or take a look at their website here.

In October we also re-started our monthly volunteer nights. We thank our loyal volunteers, who joined some NHPC board members, to address some key (but fun) tasks like: identifying local, gay-friendly businesses who might want to advertise on our site; updating and verifying information in our membership database; organizing shelves; and cataloging books. All who participated had fun, and also walked away with a “door prize” or two. If you missed October’s volunteer night, we hope you’ll be able to make it on November 16th for the next volunteer night.

We’re also thrilled to announce two important new partnerships. Both Stonewall Speakers and The Imperial Sovereign Court of All Connecticut recently agreed to partner with the NHPC. The two groups will utilize the Center’s physical space in West Haven, and we’re all looking forward to fostering these relationships and collaborating on some great events in the near future.

The NHPC also filled a vacancy on its board last month by voting current board member Tom Donato to be co-President alongside existing co-President Dorian Harding Morick. Tom is excited to take on a greater role at the NHPC and is confident he can meet the expectations of the board and the local gay and lesbian community.

There are plenty of events to keep the community busy this month. Take a look at our Events calendar, and we know you’ll find at least one or two events that tickle your fancy.

Speaking of wire hangers (or not), the NHPC is fortunate enough this month to feature exclusive content from none other than Joan Crawford, Academy Award-winning actress. In her own unique style, Joan offers advice on raising the perfect family. And who better to give advice about children than the woman who disinherited her own? Cheers, Joan!

Joan likely won’t be in attendance, but our annual Dorothy Awards are quickly approaching. Our next organizing meeting takes place this Tuesday, November 3, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. We need your help to make this event a success! Please plan on joining us if you’d like to volunteer in any way.

The board has some exciting plans for the next few months, including a workshop on improving communication specifically for LGBT couples, and another workshop on stress management. Stay tuned to the website for more details. We also are beginning to plan our annual on-site holiday party to thank the community and our volunteers for their support. Save the date: December 16th, 6:30 to 8:30 pm, and keep your eyes open for further details soon!

Thanks for reading; thanks for volunteering; thanks for your support! Be sure to write us at to offer comments, criticism, praise or complaints; we listen to it all. Have a great month!

Thomas Donato is the co-President of the NHPC, lives in Hamden with his partner, and is only slightly obsessed with John Krasinski.
