Artist Statement : When I think of the word defiance I think of having nothing to lose. Sure you could give up and just fall over or your can give it your all. This is a collection made during the first few months of quarantine during a time after I was laid off and just recovering from a prior abusive relationship. Having more experience in digital art but feeling it didn’t portray the hands on nature I wanted to express my feelings I forced myself to paint with Acrylics. Prior to this I just remember high school art teachers telling me my skills at painting were not the best. But I decided I had nothing to lose with the world on fire. So I remained defiant and I hope you do too.

About the Artist

Maxwell Kale
Maxwell (they/their) is a young Connecticut native nonbinary artist living in Monroe. They first discovered his love of art after graduating high school when they saw the film “ Basquiat.” They have since over the years taken a liking to the works by Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. They consider themselves an expressionist more than anything and prefers digital art because it feels more suited for the social media age.
