Black & Brown Queer Camp | June 25 – July 1, 2021
Age : 14 – 24
The Black & Brown Queer Camp is a week-long summer intensive day camp for LGBTQ+ youth between 14 and 24 who also identify as Black, Indigenous, and People Of Color (BIPOC) and is produced in partnership with CityWide Youth Coalition, Inc. The camps leadership team include Ala Ochumare, LGBTQ+ Youth Program Manager of the New Haven Pride Center, and Jahnice Cajigas, Director of Organizing for the CityWide Youth Coalition Inc.
Queer Camp is an opportunity for LGBTQ+ young people to come together, explore LGBTQ+ history through a BIPOC lens, learn from each other about peer support, and come to understand their role in building the future of the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Through workshops, lectures, movies, and camp conversations, participants learn explore identity and their relation to the larger community.
Throughout the program, each camper is encouraged to document their experiences through expressive writing, art creation, and/or engagement on their social media. They also produce a project which channels their feelings on identity and related matters, which they get to keep. Each young person participating in the camp recieve a small stipend at the conclusion of their experience.
All camp leadership, program curators, facilitators, and youth program support team leaders identify as both LGBTQ+ and BIPOC.
