Self Love

A Multi-artist Showcase
February 3 – 28, 2020
Great Room Gallery, New Haven

Buzzwords like “Self-Care” and “Self-Love” dominate conversations about work environments, activism, and community spaces. But what does self care actually look like? In this exhibition, artists look inwards and explore the answers to questions like: What do you love to love yourself? How do you express what is uniquely you through art? How do you care for yourself, and is that enough?

How to Spell

The Art of Zulynette
September 14 – October 30
Great Room Gallery, New Haven

“How to Spell” speaks to a cycle of identity reclamation that challenges the stories fed to us – who we are, where we’re going, what we ought to be, a metaphorical death of a past identity, and a growing into a new form of being. The paintings chosen for this show capture moments in time of taking back and defining my identities – my queerness, the person I wanted to evolve into, the parts of me that are gloriously unladylike. These pieces – all my pieces – serve as a challenge to what queer and/or Puerto Rican art can look like.

Reflections

The Art of Tia Lynn Waters
November 16 – 29, 2020
Great Room Gallery, New Haven

In “Reflections,” Tia Lynn Waters takes an artistic look at the world around her – what she sees in the news and on the streets – and how our community, especially those who look and identify like her, are experiencing the world right now. This exhibition features both new and retrospective works, including a piece in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance.

In honor of the 32nd World AIDS Day, this show features artwork by John Suro and Jonathan Joseph, both of whose work reflects on HIV/AIDS and the communities most affected by it.
