Higher Ground
The Art of Lena Fin

May 3 – 31, 2021
Great Room Gallery, New Haven

Artist Statement

Higher Ground is a collection of mixed media pieces centered on female identity. Using collage as a way to visually represent the multiplicity of the human experience, the pieces aim to portray both struggle and triumphs, whether they are external or internal. Created largely during the early stages of the Global Pandemic, the works are introspective as well as universal in their embrace of chaos and possibilities of tomorrow.

Meet the Artist

Lena Fin (she/her)

Lena is a Polish native who has lived in New Haven since 2017. Her work stems from a unique lens of someone whose identity has been formed by the concept of being “foreign.” Through mixed media collages, she explores the perceptions of gender expectations, stereotypes, heteronormativity and the immigrant experience. Her latest series, Higher Ground, revolves around topics of spiritual defeat and rebirth in face of adversity.
